好感                (Feelings)

根據報道，懷疑因解僱女助理而受到抨擊的民主黨立法會議員甘乃威在記者會承認有一次對他的前任女助理說對她有好感，但不是示愛。Under-fire Democratic Party law-maker Kam Nai-wai admitted he once told his former assistant he had feelings for her, but felt that did not amount to making advances to her。他被傳媒訪問時強忍眼淚，說今次事件引致女助理、家人、民主黨和其他支持者面對壓力，他深感內疚。他說自己是率直的人，他曾說對她有好感，但沒有任何追求她的行為。I am a straight person and I said I had feelings for her, but I did not… act in any way to pursue her。

Feelings是「好感、感情」的意思。它是名詞(複數)，其他例子：

She hates talking about her feelings是「她討厭談她的感情」，

I still have feelings for him是「我仍然對他有好感」。

借口        (Pretext)

最近，「有好感」成為熱門話題。一時間日久生情、同病相憐、相逢恨晚、遲來的春天、相識也是緣份、同是天涯淪落人等，大家都脫口而出。我們明白男女感情絕不簡單。但如果因為以上原因而移情別戀，那只是尋找更好生活的借口。We use it as a pretext for a better life。其實，感情發生問題，雙方應共同負責。分手前說沒有feel、合不來、你不瞭解我、你很好，但他/她更好等，只是我們滿足個人需要的借口。It is used by us as a pretext for satisfying our personal needs。有人用生活不快樂作為離婚的借口，She divorced him under the pretext of years of unhappiness。沒錯，今天X君的黃金遊艇令你快樂，但將來Y君的鑽石飛機準令你明天不快樂了。

白頭浪            (White horses)

有讀者問讀詞典有用嗎？

有用。我們可先看參考資料。它有時在結尾，有時在彩頁。內容包括動植物、工具、廚房、語法要點等。例如 White horses 是「白頭浪」，美國人說 White caps，較常用的White meat 是「白肉」、White wine是「白酒」、White collar是「白領」、White paper是「白皮書」、White sauce是「白汁」、White flag是「白旗」、White heat是「白熱 」、White House是「白宮」，White lie是「善意的謊言」、White wash是「粉飾、油灰水」、White wedding是「穿白色婚紗結婚的婚禮」，

White elephant是「白象」，即「昂貴而無用的東西」，

White knight是「白武士」，即「財經界注資或收購有危機公司的救星」。

注意：詞典沒有White do (白做) ，那是港式英語。

至關重要                (Pivotal)

據報道，高焜教授獲頒諾貝爾物理獎。他鑽研光纖通訊，由於至關重要的貢獻，他成為獲得諾貝爾物理獎的第一個香港科學家。For his pivotal contribution, he became the first Hong Kong scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in physics。財經消息，內地一位官員說中央銀行應該表明需要穩定的貨幣政策。當上半年的宏觀數據發表之後，如果中央政府希望調整貨幣政策，這些數據至關重要。The first-half macro data will be pivotal if the central government wishes to adjust its monetary policy。

Pivotal是「至關重要、關鍵性」的意思。它是形容詞，其他例子：

This scene is probably the pivotal point of the whole book是「這一節可能是全書至關重要的所在」，

The Court of Appeal has a pivotal role in the English legal system是「上訴法庭在英國法制中起關鍵的作用」。

怪物                (Freak)

我們看英語電視片集和電影，常常接觸到口語詞和俚語。其中一個是 Freak，它是「怪物、怪人、畸形生物、異類」的意思。例子：

One of the new lambs is a freak, it was born with two tails是「新生小羊中有一隻是畸形的，生下來就有兩條尾巴」，

He looks a real freak in his pink trousers and orange shirt是「他身著粉紅色褲子和橙色襯衣，看上去真像個怪物」。

Freak可以是一個愛好入迷者。例如：

He is a film/health/surf/computer freak是「他是個電影/健身/衝浪/電腦迷」。

Freak out 是「異常興奮、緊張」的意思。例如：

He freaked out when he heard he’d got the job是「他聽到自己得到那份工作欣喜若狂」，

This song just freaks me out whenever I hear it 是「這首歌我無論任何時候聽到，都會非常興奮」。

Repression               (壓制)

根據內地報章報道，流亡海外的熱比婭被指煽動月前在新彊發生的維吾爾族人與漢人的衝突。但這位62歲已有11名子女的母親否認指控，並指責中國壓制維吾爾族人。The 62-year-old mother of 11 denies the charges and accuses China of repression against the Uygurs。較早時，美國總統奧巴馬的發言人對西藏的宗教壓制事件表示關注，並且呼籲北京和達賴喇嘛重新對話。中國外交部隨即提出抗議。The Foreign Ministry had lodged a protest after a spokesman for President Barack Obama voiced concern for religious repression in Tibet and appealed for renewed dialogue between Beijing and the Dalai Lama。

Repression是「鎮壓、壓制」的意思。它是名詞，其他例子：

They wanted to fight all forms of injustice and repression 是「他們要同各樣的不公平和壓制進行鬥爭」。

但 Repression of feelings 是「感情上的壓抑」的意思。

Heavyweight             (要人)

內地的政治要人最近高聲告訴我們，除非我們馬上注資數以千億元到高新運輸項目上，否則將會被迫撇下。Political heavyweights from across the border have been loud recently in telling us that we will be left behind unless we immediately rush to pour tens, perhaps hundreds, of billions of dollars into fancy new transport projects。日前，唐英年獲邀出席中文大學政治及公共行政學系的論壇發表講話。以前的客席講者包括曾蔭權、曾俊華和黃仁龍：全部都是重量級人物。Previous guest speakers at the forum have included Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam- kuen, Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun- wah, and Secretary for Justice Wong Yan- lung, all heavyweights。

Heavyweight是「要人、重量級人物、巨子」的意思。它是名詞，其他例子：

He was one of the heavyweights of the film industry in Hong Kong是「他曾經是香港電影業巨子」。

注意：股票方面， Heavyweight指「重磅股」。

老襯                (Sucker)

有讀者問 Sucker是甚麼意思？

Sucker是英語電視片集和電影中經常聽到的詞語。它是非正式用語，是「容易上當受騙的人、老襯、傻瓜」的意思。例如：

You are a sucker to believe his stories是「你居然相信他的說法，真是大傻瓜」，

He’d believe anything - - he’s such a sucker ! 是「他甚麼都會相信 – 他就是那麼一個大傻瓜」。

其他相關詞彙有 You suck，它是「你真糟」的意思。其他例子：

Their new CD sucks 是「他們新出的CD 真糟」，

The system sucks是「那系統真糟」。

Suck it up是「忍氣吞聲、逆來順受」。

Suck up to是「巴結、奉承、討好」的意思。例如：

She’s always sucking up to her teacher是「她總是討好老師」，

He’s been sucking up like mad to the boss是「他一直在拼命巴結老板」。

策劃        (Hatch)

據報道，有關方面正研究引入內地家庭傭工，但沒有時間表。有官員表示，該主意是在僱主與外傭因種族和語言差異發生衝突後，首先在兩年前策劃的。The official said the idea was first hatched more than two years ago after conflict between employers and their foreign helpers stemming from racial and language differences。幾個月前，一些的士司機對短加長減的收費措施表不滿。該計劃的設計由業界和運輸署官員策劃，並獲立法會議員通過，但卻侵犯了業界的各種利益。By design, the scheme - hatched by the industry and transport officials, and passed by lawmakers - is intended to step on the toes of the various interests in the trade。

Hatch是「策劃、密謀」的意思。它是動詞，其他例子：

They hatched a plot to murder the official是「他們密謀殺害那官員」，

He is hatching a plan of escape是「他正在策劃逃走」。

Teeth                (權威)

較早時，二十國舉行峰會。有人恐怕它的作用很低，因為G8會議、聯合國安理會和其他跨國組織經常因為所作的決定缺乏權威而捱批。The G8, the UN Security Council and other multinational groups are often criticized for making decisions that lack teeth。數個月前，旺角多個狂徒擲下腐蝕性液體。有人向私隱專員公署申請裝設閉路電視。署方回應說自從立法會通過法案創立該署，他很高興立法會向該署給與權威。He responded that since Legco passed the statute creating the commission, he would be pleased to see the council giving teeth to the commission。

Teeth是「權威」的意思，其他例子：

If the Commission is to be effective, it must be given more teeth是「委員會要起作用必須付與它更大的權威」，

The law must have teeth, and it must be enforced是「法律必須擁有權威，並且必須執行」。

併發症            (Complication)

上星期，一名嬰兒在母親剖腹生產時發生大腿骨折，浸會醫院形容那是無可避免的「併發症」。The Baptist Hospital has described a broken leg suffered by a newborn during a cesarean section as an "unavoidable complication." 較早時，行政會議決定為大約二百萬的四類目標人士注射疫苗。他們包括保健人員、半歲或以上和六歲以下的兒童、年滿六十五歲的人、以及那些由於先前存在的醫療情況面對很大死亡或併發症風險的人。They are health-care workers; children aged six months or above and below six years old; persons aged 65 and above; and persons at high risk of death and complications due to pre-existing medical conditions。

Complication在醫學上是「併發症」的意思。它是名詞，其他例子：

She developed complications after the surgery是「她手術後出現了併發症」，

The doctors said that there were no complications是「醫生說沒有併發症」。

赤裸裸            (Blatant)

上星期，龔如心遺產案完成結案陳詞。華懋的律師說陳振聰所指稱的遺囑的訂立經過長達一百頁，都是赤裸裸的謊言。He said it took 100 pages to set out the blatant lies Chan told the court about the making of the alleged will。數月前，電訊盈科申請私有化失敗，後來決定不上訴。有專欄作家說私有化沒有違法，但是電訊盈科明目張膽地採用這種做法明顯是不公平和錯誤的。The practice is not illegal, but it is clear from its blatant use in the PCCW fiasco that it is unfair and wrong。

Blatant是「赤裸裸、明目張膽」的意思。它是形容詞，其他例子：

The whole episode was a blatant attempt to gain publicity是「整個事件完全是明目張膽的宣傳企圖」。

它的副詞是 Blatantly。例子：

He just blatantly lied about it是「他簡直是睜著眼睛說瞎話」。

反轉                (Inside-out)

有讀者問「佢隻襪反轉著」的英文是甚麼？

我們知道「反轉著」是「穿反了」的意思。所以上文是「他把襪子穿反了」，英文是 He puts his socks on inside out。其他例子：

She has her jumper on inside out是「她把羊毛衣穿反了」，

Her umbrella blew inside out是「她的雨傘吹反了」，

Turn that shirt inside out when you wash it 是「洗那件襯衣的時候應翻個面」。

注意： turn a place inside out是「非正式英語」，它是「徹底搜查」的意思。例如：

I’ve turned the house inside out but I still can’t find my keys是「我把房子翻了個底朝天仍沒能找到鑰匙」，

The burglars had turned the house inside out是「爆竊匪把房子翻箱倒篋」。

至於「上下翻轉」，它是 upside down。例如：

Turn the bottle upside down and shake it是「把瓶子倒過來，搖一搖」。

有內鬼    (Inside job)

較早時，區域法院判定一家投資銀行的前任董事總經理內幕交易罪名成立，入獄七年及罰款。證監會行政總裁說，這次判刑發出最強可能的訊息，說明內幕交易是香港不可容忍的。被判有罪的人將會預期接受很長的監禁。 The sentence sends the strongest possible message that insider dealing is not tolerated in Hong Kong and those found guilty can expect lengthy terms of imprisonment。內幕交易在2003年被列為刑事罪行。Insider trading was made a criminal offence in 2003。

Insider dealing 是「內幕交易」的意思，美國是 Insider trading。其他例子：

He has received the toughest sentence handed down by a Hong Kong court for the crime是「他被香港法院判處該罪行最嚴厲的刑期」。

注意： Insider trader是「內幕交易人士」，

Insider 是「知情人士」。

Inside job是「內賊作案」即「有內鬼」。

關於特首普選問題，有專欄作家說最燙手的問題是最大的持份者--即社會大眾--需要甚麼？However, the burning question is what does the biggest stakeholder - the general public - want? 另一方面，過去幾年北京透過優惠政策向特區提供一些經濟利益。也許本地人如果希望更加瞭解中港關係的微妙問題，就應該學會從其他持份者的觀點來看事情。Maybe local people should learn to look through the perspective of other stakeholders if they want to better understand the subtle question of mainland-Hong Kong relations。

Stakeholder是「持份者」的意思，即是「參與人、有權益關係者」。其他例子：

The government has said it wants to create a stakeholder economy in which all members of society feel that they have an interest its success是「政府表示希望建立一個持份者經濟模式，讓社會全體成員覺得其繁榮將給每個人帶來利益」。

兩極化    (Polarised)

根據報章的政治分析家的報道，回歸後香港的立法會議員黨派旗幟鮮明。很多時議員會分為支持和反對兩派，因此辯論大有可能更為兩極化。Debate is likely to become more polarised as a result, say observers of the political scene。另一方面，政府建議十二月在大埔推行校園驗毒計劃，參與驗毒計劃的中學生的意見看來很兩極化。支持該計劃和自願參與驗毒的學生肯定是那些不吸毒的同學。The opinions of secondary school students - the ones who will be taking the tests - appear to be polarised. Those who support the plan and will certainly volunteer are those who do not take drugs。

Polarised 是「兩極化」它是形容詞。其他例子：

The socialist movement had become polarized by 1880是「到1880年，社會主義運動已兩極化」，

The issue has polarised the voters是「這問題已經把選民分化為兩極」。

約會        (Date)

有讀者問I have a date with my lawyer是否正確？

我們明白Set a date/make a date是「約定會面時間和地點」的意思。例如：
They have not set a date for their next meeting是「他們尚未約定下次會面的時間和地點」，

Call me next week and we’ll try and make a date是「下星期打電話給我，我們試一試約定見面時間」。

但 Date更常用於非正式英語，它是 A planned social meeting between a man and a woman, or boy and girl即「異性約會」的意思。例如：

I’ve got a date with Mary tomorrow night是「明天晚上我與瑪麗有個約會」，

Does your mother let you go out on dates是「你母親讓你與異性約會嗎？」

因此，如果我們約見律師是為了公事，就不應該說Date，應說 I have an appointment with my lawyer。

最近，很多人討論少女援交問題，英文是 Compensated dating。

Raise sb’s hackles            (激怒某人)

據報道，政府提到醫療改革時，市民的情緒都會高漲。誰應該付款？誰免費？資助程度？應該和怎樣提供甚麼服務？這些複雜問題總會激怒政客和權益團體。Emotions went high whenever governments raised the issue of health care reform. Who should pay, who should get it free, to what degree it should be subsidized, what services should be offered and how – the complexities invariably raised the hackles of politicians and interest groups。四月，有議員就外匯基金在第一季度的虧損質問任志剛，但這馬上激怒了他。他說：「如果你找到一個基金的第一季虧損少於1% ，請告訴我」。That raised Yam’s hackles: If you find a fund that reports losses of less than 1 percent in the first quarter, please let me know。

Raise sb’s hackles是「激怒某人」的意思。其他例子：

The prime minister’s speech has raised hackles among the opposition是「首相的演說激怒了反對派」。

忘我           (Selfless)

同學常常問我當教師最重要的條件是甚麼？我說好老師在工作時必需忘我。經常用金錢衡量工作多少的人不宜當老師。例如最近報章報道全世界的器官捐贈遠遠供不應求。在一個缺乏有效道德監管的社會，忘我犧牲的行為可能很容易商業化、腐敗或喪失人性。In the absence of effective ethical regulation, what should be a selfless sacrifice can easily become commercialized, corrupted or dehumanised。2003年，香港爆發沙士。那些醫生無私奉獻於拯救病人，他們的行為最令人鼓舞。We were inspired by the selfless dedication of doctors who battled the 2003 outbreak of SARS。

Selfless是「忘我、無私」的意思。它是形容詞，其他例子：

Selfless devotion to the service and undeniable bravery have marked out law enforcers是「對事業的無私奉獻和義不容辭的勇敢一直是選拔執法者的條件」。
